Steel that is only hard is brittle — load it and it shatters. The strength we actually want comes from tempering: reheating and controlled cooling that trades a little hardness for far greater toughness, so the metal flexes under stress instead of snapping.
Minds work the same way. The goal isn't to feel nothing and never bend. It's to be tempered — able to take a hit, flex, and hold.
Mental health isn't just the absence of illness. The World Health Organization describes it as a state of wellbeing that lets you cope with the normal stresses of life, work and learn productively, and contribute to the people around you.1
Everyone has mental health the way everyone has physical health — and it moves up and down over a lifetime.2
The American Psychological Association defines resilience as adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, threats, or serious stress.3
Here's the part that changes everything: resilience is not a fixed trait you're either born with or without. Research shows it's an active process — shaped by both biology and environment — that can be learned and strengthened across your whole life.4

In the forge — worked example
A guy on your crew has gone quiet — shorter fuse, rougher around the edges, brushing off anyone who asks. The old script says leave him to it; a real one sorts himself out.
Brittle response
Say nothing, or tell him to suck it up — that's how you were raised. Treat needing anything as weakness, keep your own struggles bottled, and call the silence strength. Under enough load, that hardness cracks — often without warning.
Tempered response
Read it for what it is: a sign, not a defect. You don't have to fix him — you flex. A quiet “you've seemed off lately, I'm around if you want to talk” costs nothing and bends the moment toward help instead of further into the bottle.
